AD SANCTI CANNICI

Music in honour of St Canice

Resurgam’s programme for the patronal festival of St Canice’s Cathedral, Kilkenny, is based around the plainsong office for St Canice, found in the large chant antiphoner originating from the cathedral in the fifteenth century. The plainsong antiphons and hymns are interspersed with motets by Schein, Schütz, Monterverdi and Bach. The poetically-inspired figurative language of the early-mid baroque forms a rich foil to the monody of the chant. The motets by Schein and Schütz are drawn from Fontana Israel : Israelis Brünnlein (Leipzig 1623), and Geistliche Chormusik (Dresden 1648), respectively.
